Options on the Audience page of the post flow

Notice: This article is currently being updated to reflect recent releases. Some steps, options, and/or screenshots shown here may not match what you see in-app. Functionality and behavior may continue to evolve as improvements are rolled out.

The Audience page in the post creation flow allows you to customize which segments of your audience receive your newsletter. This feature gives you complete control over how your newsletter is presented — whether via Email, Web, or both — and which groups of subscribers receive your content. Your selections on this page will also influence the options available in the subsequent Email and Web pages of the post flow.

The ‘Audience’ tab or page is one part of the overall post creation process, organized into 5 tabs (Compose, Audience, Email, Web, Review) at the top of the Post Builder. The post flow is designed to guide you step-by-step through crafting and publishing a post, using the ‘Next’ button to move between pages. If you prefer to navigate out of order, you can use the 5 tabs to jump directly to any stage of the process.

Note: The audience selections you make on this page will determine what options you have moving forward. If you select only a web audience, you will not see the email page, and vice versa.

Selecting the email and web audience for your post

  1. From your beehiiv account, create a new post draft or select to edit one of your saved posts.

Pro Tip: Once logged into your account, you can quickly start creating a new post by typing or pasting beehiiv.new into your browser. If you manage multiple publications, the new draft will open in whichever publication you currently have selected.
  2. The Post Builder will open on the Compose page where you can create your post as usual or review your content. Once you’re satisfied with everything, click Next to proceed.
  3. You’ll be taken to the Audience page, where you can select the audience you want to send to for both Email and Web. By default, both options are set to include ‘All Free Subscribers.’
  4. Use Publish your post to options at the top to decide who you wish to send to: Email and web (selected by default), Email only, or Web only.

Email Audience

  1. Under Email Audience, check the boxes to select which audiences to include. Choose from All Free Subscribers (selected by default), All Paid Subscribers, or individual tiers of your paid subscribers.

Next to each subscriber group, you will see how many subscribers within the tier you are selecting. Your total number of recipients will display up top next to Email Audience.
  2. To remove a subscriber group, simply uncheck the box next to the corresponding audience option.

If you want to publish solely as a web post, just go back up to the top and select Web only. The Email audience will no longer be an option, and you’ll only see your web publishing options.

  3. You can further customize your email audience by using segments to optimize your sending strategy. To enable this feature, toggle on Include and exclude segments.

This will allow you to search for and select segments you've already created for inclusion or exclusion from your email recipients. If you need to add or modify your segments, simply click Manage segments.

You can include and exclude a combined total of up to 5 segments. For example, you could include 3 segments and exclude 2, or you could exclude up to 5 segments without including any.
  4. If you are on an Enterprise plan, you’ll also see the option to Exclude recipients from previous posts or Limit send size. Both of these options are part of the random cohort sends feature. For more information, read our guide, Sending to a random cohort of your audience.

Web Audience

  1. Under Web Audience, check the boxes to select which audiences to include. Choose from All Free Subscribers (selected by default), All Paid Subscribers, or individual tiers of your paid subscribers.

If you need to manage your paid subscriptions, click on the Manage tiers and plans link to head straight there.

  2. To remove a subscriber group, uncheck the box next to the corresponding audience option.

If you want to publish solely as an email post, return to the top of the page and click on the Email only option. The web options will no longer be available for you to select.

  3. If you have a Community set up for your subscribers, use the Community site toggle to publish to your community site automatically.

Then, use the dropdown to decide which community channel the post will be sent to.

Tech Note: Only web posts can also be posted to the community. Email-only posts are not eligible.
  4. When everything looks good, click Next to proceed with the post creation process. Your next step is based on your audience selections.

If you selected to publish your post to email only or email and web: Your next step will be the  Email page to make selections for the email version of your newsletter.
If you selected to publish your post to web only: Your next step will be the Web page to make selections for the web version of your newsletter.

  5. Once you’ve finished the other post creation options, you’ll reach the Review page. Under the ‘Publish to’ section, click the dropdown menu to view your audience details. If you need to make any changes, select Edit.

When everything looks good, click Schedule to set a time to send your post.

Changing audience before and after sending

You can edit audience settings on draft and scheduled posts at any time before the post sends. If you have already scheduled a post, you can return to the Audience page and change which tiers, segments, or platforms (email vs web) will receive it. Your changes will apply when the post sends at its scheduled time.

Once an email has sent, the email audience is locked. You cannot change who received the email version of a published post. However, you can still edit the web version of the post (the content itself, title, subtitle, thumbnail, and SEO settings) after publishing. Those edits will appear on your website but will not change the email that was already delivered to inboxes.

Reminder: If you edit the Audience page settings on a scheduled post and then immediately publish or reschedule it, make sure the audience selections still reflect your intent. Clearing all subscriber groups from the Email Audience section will result in the post being published to the web only, with no email send.

Resending a post to a different audience

Once a post has been sent, you cannot change its email audience. If you want to send the same content to a different segment or tier, duplicate the post, adjust the audience settings in the duplicate, and send it.

Duplicating a post creates a new draft with a new web URL. The duplicated post will have "(1)" appended to its title and slug. If you want both the original and the duplicate to point to the same web post, you can configure the duplicate to send as email-only, or you can use the custom display settings on the Web page to link the email version back to the original web URL.

To duplicate a post, go to Posts in the left panel, find the post you want to duplicate, click on the 3 dots menu, and select Duplicate post. The duplicate will appear in your Posts list as a new draft. You can then adjust the audience, schedule, or content before sending.
