How to add custom fields to your subscribe form

Notice: This article covers the Website Builder, which is continuously evolving based on customer feedback. Some details shown here may differ slightly from what you see in-app.

By default, your subscribe forms collect an email address. You can add custom fields to collect additional information at signup, such as name, location, or preferences. Once collected, that data lives on each subscriber's profile and can be used to segment, target, and personalize your content.

How to add a custom field to your subscribe form

  1. From your account, go to Website > Builder.
  2. Open the page that contains your subscribe form and click the subscribe form block on the canvas to select it. Or, insert one by clicking the + icon in the left toolbar and selecting Subscribe form.
  3. With the form selected, click Add field under Form fields in the right design panel.

  4. Choose from the Quick fields provided (such as First name or Last name) or click Build your own to create a custom field. If you use a Quick fields option, your field will be added immediately to your form.

  5. If you choose to build your own field, follow the prompts in the modal to customize the field options. Click Add field to save.

  • Type: Short response lets subscribers type freely. Dropdown presents a list of options to choose from.
  • Name: An internal label visible only to you, used to identify the field in your subscriber data and as the merge tag name.
  • Placeholder: Example text shown inside the field before a subscriber clicks into it.
  • Required: If enabled, subscribers must complete this field to submit the form.
Reminder: To see your changes on your live site, make sure to publish your website.

Where to find submitted data

Answers are saved to each subscriber's profile under Custom Fields. To view them, go to Subscribers > All subscribers and open the subscriber's profile.

What you can do with collected data

Segment by answer: Create a dynamic segment with a Custom field condition to group subscribers by what they entered. See Creating and using segments in beehiiv for more details.

Send targeted posts: Select that segment as your send target in the Audience step of the post flow to reach only the matching subscribers.

Personalize content with merge tags: Insert a subscriber's answer into your post using the field's name as a merge tag.

For full merge tag guidance, see Reserved beehiiv fields and merge tag examples.
