Understanding when earnings arrive in your Wallet

Whenever you earn money through the Ad Network or outgoing recommendations, your earnings are deposited into your beehiiv Wallet according to the following schedule.

Ad Network payouts: Earnings are automatically transferred to your Wallet on the 20th of each month for all ad placements that ran in the previous month. For example, on March 20th, you would receive payment for all ad revenue earned in February.

Outgoing recommendations payouts: Earnings from outgoing recommendations are deposited into your Wallet as subscribers are verified. Once a subscriber passes verification, the payout is processed and added to your available balance.

Still have questions? Read our guide, Troubleshooting missing or delayed Wallet payouts.

Payouts continue after account changes

If you downgrade your beehiiv plan or close your account, pending Ad Network and outgoing recommendations earnings will still be paid out on the normal payout schedule. The 20th-of-the-month schedule for Ad Network earnings continues regardless of subscription status changes.

Reminder: Once earnings arrive in your Wallet, you can withdraw them to your bank account at any time, even if you've downgraded to a free plan.

Understanding your Ad Network payout

Your Ad Network report is billed on payable clicks, a quality-weighted measure of eligible clicks rather than a simple pass or fail count, so it won't always match the click counts you see in your post performance reports. For a full breakdown of how payable clicks are calculated and why the numbers differ, refer to Understanding payable clicks in the beehiiv Ad Network.

Accessing invoices and tax documentation

beehiiv does not generate traditional invoices for Ad Network or paid recommendations earnings. However, you can access payout documentation and transaction records for accounting and tax purposes.

For Ad Network earnings

Your Ad Network reports serve as your official payout documentation. Each report can be downloaded as a PDF, including the payout amount, performance breakdown, and payment date.

For outgoing recommendations earnings

Payout records for outgoing recommendations are available through the Stripe Express account connected to your beehiiv profile. Stripe provides receipts with reference numbers, amounts, and dates.

For consolidated transaction records

To export a complete record of all Wallet activity, go to your Wallet dashboard, scroll to the Earnings and expenses section, and click Export as CSV. This download includes all transactions (earnings, deposits, and expenses), which you can filter by transaction type (Ad Network or Paid Recommendations) and timeframe.

Tech Note: Stripe provides tax forms (such as 1099-K) for earnings over $5,000 in a calendar year. If you meet this threshold, Stripe will issue the form directly. For Mercury payments (used for certain accounts), you'll complete a W9 or W8 form during account setup.

Frequently asked questions about the beehiiv Wallet

How can I view a detailed list of my earnings and expenses in my Wallet?

Scroll down in your Wallet dashboard to the Total earnings and Total expenses sections. Here, you'll find a breakdown of:

  • Earnings from the Ad Network and Paid recommendations.
  • Expenses related to Paid recommendations.
How do I filter transactions in my Wallet?

In the Earnings and expenses section, you can filter your results by transaction type, Ad Network, or Paid recommendations.

You can also filter your results by the transaction time to narrow results to a specific timeframe.

How can I export a CSV of my transactions for accounting purposes?

To download a CSV file of all your Wallet transactions, go to the Earnings and expenses section and click the Export as CSV button. This will give you full documentation of your transactions to track for business and accounting purposes.

What do the different Wallet transaction types mean?

There are 3 types of Wallet transactions: Deposited, Spent, and Earned. Here's what each entails:

  • Deposited: Funds you've added to your Wallet.
  • Spent: Funds used for paid recommendations.
  • Earned: Revenue generated from the Ad Network or paid recommendations.
What can Wallet funds be used for?

You can use these funds to spend on paid recommendations to grow your newsletter.

What's the difference between total and available to spend?

In an effort to avoid a negative balance, we temporarily withhold funds during the paid recommendations verification phase, much like a bank setting a temporary charge on your credit card. After the verification is done, we return any surplus funds to your available balance, which is the amount you can still use for spending. For instance, if your Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) is $2.00 and there are 100 signups yet to be verified, we'll place a hold of $200.00. In this example, your available balance will be your total balance minus this held $200.00.

How long will my funds be held?

Our team works to expedite the verification process and aims to make the period of funds being held as brief as possible. However, to ensure paid recommendations are delivering high-quality signups, the process can take anywhere from 3 to 21 days, depending on various factors.

Why don't my Ad Network payout numbers match my post performance numbers?

Your Ad Network payout is based on payable clicks — the clicks eligible for payout within the campaign's payout window after excluding automated and invalid traffic. Your post performance report shows overall engagement with your send, which answers a different question, so some gap between the two is normal and expected. See Understanding payable clicks in the beehiiv Ad Network for the full explanation and more FAQs on how payable clicks are calculated.

How can I enlarge the graph of my earnings or expenses to get a better view?

Hover over the graph preview on your Wallet dashboard and click on the arrows icon to enlarge it.

Once expanded, you can filter the graph by the type of transaction (Paid recommendations or Ad Network) and time period.

Can I move transferred funds back to available to withdraw?

No. Transferred earnings cannot be reverted back to 'Available to withdraw' or be withdrawn.
