Troubleshooting signup flows

If your signup flow isn't working as expected, the sections below cover the most common issues and how to resolve them.

Check where test subscribers appear

If you submit a test signup and don't see the subscriber where you expect, check the following before assuming the form failed:

  • Email already subscribed: If the address you're testing is already in your audience, the form may appear unresponsive since it won't create a duplicate subscriber. Use an email address that isn't currently subscribed to your publication.
  • Double opt-in enabled: The subscriber shows as Pending until they click the confirmation link in their email. Check your test inbox for that email. Read Double opt-in and Smart Nudge: How they work and why they matter for more details.
  • Require subscriber approval enabled: The subscriber shows as Needs approval until you manually approve them from their subscriber profile. See How to require new subscribers to request access to your newsletter for more information.

To find your test subscriber:

  1. Go to Subscribers from the left panel.
  2. While in your subscriber list, use the dropdown labeled All subscribers to filter your subscriber list by status.

  3. Check for subscribers labeled with Pending and Needs approval statuses so you catch subscribers who haven't finished confirming or been approved yet.
  4. Use the search bar at the top of your subscriber list to search for the test email address and to verify if you need to follow the steps above for Double opt in or Require subscriber approval enabled.

External redirect opens in a new tab instead of redirecting directly

When an external URL is the only step in your signup flow, some browsers (particularly Safari) may block the redirect as a popup, requiring visitors to manually allow popups in their browser settings.

Why this happens: Browser security features can treat a direct external redirect immediately after form submission as a potential popup.

How to fix it: Add at least one internal step, such as a modal, survey, or custom page, before the external redirect. A Redirect to URL step can only be used as the final step in a flow, so build it in after another step rather than as the first and only one.

Example flow that works consistently:

  1. Signed up (trigger)
  2. Open Modal (show a recommendations modal)
  3. Redirect to URL (your external link)

Redirect link in a signup flow is broken or goes to a 404 page

If your redirect link doesn't work or lands on a 404 error, check the following:

  • Missing protocol: Make sure the URL includes https:// at the beginning. example.com/page won't work; use https://example.com/page instead.
  • Redirect to URL placed mid-flow: External URLs can only be used as the final step in a signup flow. If you need an external redirect earlier in the flow, move it to the last position, or use an internal beehiiv page instead.
  • Redirecting to a specific post: If you're linking to one of your posts, use the post's full published URL rather than a placeholder or shorthand. If the destination only resolves correctly from certain pages, confirm the link on the actual page where the flow will run before publishing.

Subscribe form on a custom page doesn't route through the signup flow

If you've embedded a subscribe form on a custom page using the HTML embed code for an external subscribe form, that form won't route subscribers through your signup flow, even if you've set a redirect URL in the form's settings.

Why this happens: Embedded subscribe forms are built for external sites and only support a single redirect after submission. They don't support multi-step signup flows.

How to fix it: Use a native subscribe form block instead. In the Website Builder, go to the page where you want the form, click the + button, choose Blocks under Templates, then select the Subscribe form tab and click Add block. Once it's added, assign your signup flow to the form in the right-hand panel under Signup Flow. See How to add subscribe forms to your beehiiv website for the full walkthrough.

Survey step is not displaying, or asks readers to log in or re-enter their email

If a survey step in your signup flow doesn't appear, or a reader is prompted to log in or re-enter information they just provided, check the following:

  • Confirm you selected a specific survey: When you add a survey page as a step, use the Survey form dropdown in the right panel to choose which survey to display. If no survey is selected, the step won't work correctly.
  • Create the survey first if the dropdown is empty: Only surveys you've already created will appear as options. Go to Subscribers > Surveys to create one, then return to the signup flow editor to select it. See How to create and use beehiiv surveys.
  • Check the Auto log in setting: Surveys in a signup flow require the subscriber to be recognized as logged in to attach responses to their profile. If a reader is prompted to log in again right after subscribing, confirm Enable auto log in is turned on under Website > Builder > Settings > All general settings > Signup flows. This setting is on by default.

Thank-you page or custom page is not appearing after subscription

If readers aren't redirected to your thank-you page or custom page after subscribing, check the following:

  • Confirm a signup flow is assigned to the subscribe form: In the Website Builder, click the subscribe form, then check the Signup Flow field in the right panel. If no flow is assigned, select one from the dropdown or create a new one.
  • Publish your page after assigning the flow: Changes to signup flows don't go live until you publish the page containing the subscribe form.
  • Check for a conflicting double opt-in redirect: If you have double opt-in enabled with an Opt-in Redirect URL, and a signup flow assigned to the same form, the two can conflict: the signup flow runs immediately after subscription, while the double opt-in redirect only fires once the reader confirms their email. If you need both, consider relying on one or the other rather than combining them. Read Double opt-in and Smart Nudge: How they work and why they matter for more information.
  • Check the "On finish, redirect back to starting page" toggle: When enabled, readers are sent back to the page they subscribed from once the flow completes. This toggle only works when your final step is an internal beehiiv page, not an external URL. Turn it off if you want readers to land on a thank-you page instead.

Signup flow doesn't advance or appears stuck

If visitors report that the flow doesn't move past a certain step, try these checks:

  • Verify the page is published: Click Publish in the top-right corner of the Website Builder after any change to a signup flow or subscribe form.
  • Check browser extensions: Ad blockers, privacy tools, and content filters can interfere with form submission. Ask the reader to test in an incognito or private window with extensions disabled.
  • Test in multiple browsers: Some behaviors, like external redirect blocking, are browser-specific. Try Chrome, Safari, and Firefox to see whether the issue is universal or limited to one browser.
  • Check for double opt-in: If double opt-in is enabled, subscribers stay in Pending status and won't advance through certain flow behaviors until they click the confirmation link in their email. Check the subscriber's status in your audience dashboard.

Subscribe form freezes on ‘Subscribing…’

If a subscribe form gets stuck mid-submission and doesn't complete, work through these steps in order:

  1. Test in an incognito or private browser window to rule out cached data or extensions.
  2. Disable browser extensions, especially ad blockers and privacy or content-filtering tools, then test again.
  3. Clear your browser cache, restart the browser, and try again.
  4. Update your browser to the most recent version.
  5. Try a different browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge).
  6. Try a different network connection or device, if possible.

If the form works in incognito mode but not in your regular browser, a browser extension is the likely cause. Re-enable extensions one at a time to identify which one is interfering.

Signup flow issues on mobile devices

If your signup flow works on desktop but not on mobile (forms freeze, the page refreshes instead of advancing, or a survey step loops), try the following:

  • Test on another mobile browser or device: On iOS, Safari and Chrome share the same underlying browser engine, so an issue affecting one may affect both. Testing on Android, if available, can help isolate the cause.
  • Clear the mobile browser cache: Cached data on mobile can cause a flow to behave unexpectedly.
  • Disable private browsing or tracking protection temporarily: Some mobile browsers block scripts or redirects when these settings are on.

A survey response and subscription can be captured successfully even if the page appears to refresh or stay on the same screen. If a reader reports this, confirm in your audience dashboard that their subscription and survey response were recorded.

Subscribe form isn't resetting after a successful submission

If a subscribe form stays filled out after a reader subscribes, making it unclear whether the subscription went through, try refreshing the page. Forms are designed to reset automatically after a successful submission, but caching or browser state can sometimes prevent this. If refreshing doesn't resolve it, clear your browser cache and test again.
