Setting up email notifications for your community
Email notifications bring your community into your members' inboxes. Instead of relying on the in-app bell or a push notification, a member can get an email when someone follows them, sends them a message, or comments on their post, so they don't have to be actively checking in to catch what's happening. This article covers how to turn email notifications on for your community and what members control on their end once it's live.
About community notification channels
Your community can reach members in a few ways:
- In-app bell: automatic for every member, no setup needed on your end. See Managing your community notifications as a member.
- Push notifications: members turn these on themselves if they've installed your community as an app on their phone. See Setting up the mobile app for your community membership.
- Email notifications: the one channel you control. This article covers turning it on.
Turning on email notifications
Email notifications are off by default. You switch them on for your community from Community > Notifications.
Once turned on, you can modify your From name to customize the name members see in their inbox. Beneath the text field, you’ll see an example so that you can visualize how your email will look once sent to your subscribers. If you do not set a From name, it will default to your community name.
How emails work for your community members
Once you've turned this on, members can receive an email for the following events:
- Messages: Group and DM chats.
- Reactions: On a member’s post or comment.
- Comments: On a member’s post
- Comment replies: To a member’s comments
- Badges earned
- New followers
Turning this on for your community doesn't mean every member gets every email. Each member chooses which activity types are worth an email to them from their own notification settings. See Managing your community notifications as a member for what that looks like on their side.
