How to change your beehiiv plan type and plan tier
This article goes over how to make changes to your beehiiv plan types and plan tiers. The cost of each plan type depends on your subscriber plan tier, for more information on various types and tiers that are available, please check out plan types and subscriber plan tier pricing.
Upgrades
How to upgrade your plan type and plan tier from the Launch plan
These steps are for users on the Launch plan.
- From the left panel Dashboard, scroll down and click on Settings.
- From the Settings panel, select Billing & Plan.
- Go to the Your Current Plan section, and click Change.
- A popup will appear displaying your upgrade options and what is included in each plan.
- Click the dropdown menu under How many subscribers? to select the number of subscribers you need for your plan.
- Click the dropdown menu under How would you like to pay? to select your billing cadence (Monthly or Yearly). Then, click Upgrade to Scale or Upgrade to Max, whichever plan you prefer.
Reminder: The prices displayed are reflective of the plan type you're choosing and the amount of active subscribers you have across all publications that determine your plan tier. For more information, please visit our Pricing page. - Review your selections and confirm your updates. If you have a promotion code, click Add Promotion Code then enter your code in the box.
- Click Go to Checkout if everything looks as expected, or click Cancel if you need to go back.
- You’ll be taken to your Stripe Billing Portal and presented with a breakdown of what you’ll be charged for your plan type today and on your next billing cycle date. Review it, and then click Confirm.
- You can also click on Go Back to make adjustments to your selections.
Note: If you don’t have a payment method on file, you’ll arrive at a page where you can add that info. After including a payment method, click Continue.
- Once done, you’ll be brought back to your beehiiv account where you will see that the upgrade is in place. It will show your current plan and rate, as well as your upcoming rate on your next billing cycle date.
How to upgrade your plan type and plan tier from an existing paid plan
These steps are for users on existing paid plans who are looking to upgrade to another plan type and/or plan tier.
- From the left panel Dashboard, scroll down and click on Settings.
- From the Settings panel, select Billing & Plan.
- Go to the Your Current Plan section, and click Change.
- A popup will appear to show your current plan, with the option to upgrade to another plan. You can also update your number of subscribers and billing cadence as needed. When you are ready, click Update to Max.
Reminder: The prices displayed are reflective of the plan type you're choosing and the amount of active subscribers you have across all publications that determine your plan tier. For more information, please visit our Pricing page. - Next, confirm your updates, and add a promotional code if you have one. If you need to update your billing details, click Manage your billing details in Stripe. Refer to this article for more information on updating your payment information.
- If everything looks good, click Confirm. Clicking confirm automatically charges the card on file.
- Once done, you’ll be brought back to your beehiiv account where you will see that the upgrade is in place. It will show your current plan and rate, as well as your upcoming rate on your next billing cycle date.
How to auto-upgrade your plan tier
You have the option within your account to auto-upgrade your plan tier when you hit your subscriber limit, saving you time and potential delays if your plan limit is exceeded.
- From the left panel Dashboard, scroll down to click on Settings, and then select Billing & Plan.
- In the Your Current Plan section, under your plan details, toggle on Auto-upgrade my plan tier when I reach my subscriber limit.
How to upgrade from monthly to annual billing
These instructions are for users who are already on a paid monthly plan who wish to update to the annual payment option.
- From the left panel Dashboard, scroll down to click on Settings, and then select Billing & Plan.
- Go to the Your Current Plan section, and click Change.
- A popup will appear to show your upgrade options. Click the dropdown menu under How would you like to pay? and select Yearly.
- Under your current plan, click Upgrade to Annual.
- Confirm your changes are correct. Any prorated changes will be applied to your total due.
If you need to update your billing details, click Manage your billing details in Stripe. Refer to this article for more information on updating your payment information.
When you are ready, click Confirm. Payment will be taken when you click the Confirm button, and any prorated changes will be applied to your total due.
Downgrades and cancellations
How to downgrade your plan type
- From the left panel Dashboard, scroll down to click on Settings, and then select Billing & Plan.
- Go to the Your Current Plan section, and click Change.
- A popup will appear to show your current plan, with the option to downgrade to another plan. You can also update your number of subscribers and billing cadence as needed. When you are ready, click the Downgrade option for the plan you wish to downgrade to.
- After selecting your new tier, cadence, and downgrade option, you will be taken to a plan to review your changes.
At the bottom of the confirmation form, click on Continue to continue with your plan downgrade. Or, you can opt to remain on your current plan by selecting Nevermind, keep my plan.
- Next, you’ll be presented with a cancellation survey, please make a selection and then click on Continue.

- If you’re on a monthly plan, you will have the option to pause your plan for up to 30 days, starting at the end of your current billing cycle. During the paused period, your plan will revert to the feature set of our free Launch plan, which includes a sending limit of 2,500 subscribers.
Click on the Pause Plan button if you would like to proceed.
- A final recap of what you can expect when you downgrade will appear. Carefully review the information, then click on Downgrade to continue.
This is the last opportunity to change your mind, to do so, select Nevermind, keep my plan to opt to remain on your current plan.
- Otherwise, check the box that confirms you understand your plan will change, and then click on Cancel my plan in the bottom right corner.
- After downgrading, you’ll be brought back to your beehiiv account where you will see that the new plans for your upcoming downgrade are in place. It will show your current plan and rate, the upcoming plan and new rate, and the next billing cycle date that the upcoming plan will begin on.
You will still have access to your current plan until the end of your current billing period.
How to downgrade to monthly
- From the left panel Dashboard, scroll down to click on Settings, and then select Billing & Plan.
- Go to the Your Current Plan section, and click Change.
- A popup will appear to show your options. Click the dropdown menu under How would you like to pay? and select Monthly, then click Downgrade to Monthly.
- A popup will appear to confirm your changes. Changing to monthly will begin as soon as the existing plan ends. Clicking the confirm button will charge you at the end of your current plan.
How to cancel a plan type downgrade
You can cancel a plan type downgrade if it is before your next billing cycle date. To do so, go to Settings > Billing & Plan and scroll down to the Your Upcoming Plan section. Click on the Cancel Downgrade button.
A popup will appear giving you an opportunity to review the requested changes, where you can either Cancel or click on Proceed.
How to downgrade your plan tier
- From the left panel Dashboard, scroll down to click on Settings, and then select Billing & Plan.
- Go to the Your Current Plan section, and click Change.
- A popup will appear with your options. Click the dropdown menu under How many subscribers? and select your desired amount.
- Click Decrease Subscriber Count.
- Confirm your changes by hitting Confirm.
Website features affected when downgrading to the free plan
If you choose to downgrade, your access to Website Builder features will change depending on when your account was created. Here's what to expect if you downgrade from a paid plan to the free Launch plan.
For accounts created on or after July 15, 2025 (New Website Builder users)
If you downgrade to the free plan, you’ll lose access to several Website Builder features. Here’s what will happen:
- Custom Pages: Any published custom pages will be unpublished. They will remain saved and editable in your builder but won’t appear on your live site.
- Pricing Blocks: Pages with pricing blocks will stay live, but you won’t be able to publish changes or new versions unless the pricing block is removed.
- HTML Blocks: Similar to pricing blocks, pages with HTML blocks will remain live, but you won’t be able to update them or publish new pages that contain HTML blocks.
- Signup Flows: Any existing signup flows you’ve published will stay active, but you won’t be able to add new ones.
- Automations: Automations linked to subscribe forms will automatically become unlinked. You’ll also lose access to the Automations feature.
- Premium Templates: If your current site uses a premium template, it will remain live and unchanged. However, you’ll no longer have access to premium templates if you switch templates in the builder.
For accounts created before July 15, 2025 (Website Builder (Legacy) users)
If you're using the legacy Website Builder and downgrade to the free plan:
- Hero Section: This section will revert to the default layout.
- Subscribe Widget: Any custom text or design settings will revert to the default style.
- Post Cards: Custom styling will revert to your Global Color settings from the Styles tab.
- Featured Posts: These will remain featured.
- Custom Pages: These pages will still appear in your website’s Global Navigation, but they can no longer be accessed or edited.
