Using content tags on your website

Notice: This article covers the new Website Builder, which is continuously evolving based on customer feedback. Some details seen here may differ from what you see in-app while we update the KB.

Content tags organize your newsletter posts and help readers find what they need. In the new Website Builder, content tags power two key experiences: the default Tags page (that lists all tags) and dynamic Tag pages (that show posts for a single tag). You can also add a Tag block to any page to feature selected tags and link readers to their Tag pages.

Helpful terminology to get you started

  • Content tag: A label you assign to posts to organize content and improve navigation. Creating and assigning content tags is done within the Posts section in your account.
  • Dynamic page: A page that updates automatically based on your content (e.g., a Tag page showing all posts with that tag).
  • Default page: A page included with your template (e.g., Homepage, Subscribe, Tags).
  • Tags page: A default page listing all your content tags; each tag links to its Tag page. (The Tags page uses a Tag block to display selected content tags from your publication.)
  • Tag page: A dynamic page that displays all of the posts that have been tagged with a single content tag.
  • Tag block: An element you can add to any page to display specific tags; clicking a tag opens its Tag page.

Builder layout (where you’ll work)

When working in the Website Builder, you’ll utilize 4 key areas: the top navbar, the left icons menu, the center canvas, and the right-hand design panel.

Pro Tip: Turn on Advanced mode in the design panel to unlock more customization options. Once enabled, Advanced mode stays on each time you use the builder; you can switch it off any time for a more streamlined experience.

How to use a Tag block

A Tag block can be added to any page to feature specific content tags you choose.

To add a Tag block

  1. Navigate to the page you wish to add the Tag block to.
  2. From the left panel, click the + icon.
  3. Under Synced, click the Tags block and drag it onto the page.

  4. Once added, select the Tag block on your canvas to open the design panel.
  5. Next to Data, click on Tags, and then you’ll need to select the tags you wish to feature.

  6. The content tags selection modal will pop up. You’ll see the tags you’ve already added, plus any additional that you have available to add.
  7. Click on a tag to add it to your page. To remove a tag, simply click the x next to any added tag. When done making your selections, click the Save button.

Multiple tags layout

Tags blocks can be used to display multiple tags, which is what the default Tag block on the Tags page showcases. The tags themselves are dynamic, and pulled in from your content tags.

Single tag layout

You can use a single tag, like this example from the Tag page, where a single dynamic tag block is used as a header on the page.

Styling your tag blocks

To customize the look of your tag blocks, toggle on Advanced mode in the design panel. Be sure to select the Tag block on the canvas and then click the Edit Card Styles button in the right panel.

Reminder: Advanced mode stays on across sessions; switch it off anytime for a simpler view.

If you included an image with the content tag when you created it, you can add the image to the tag once it's on the canvas. From the left panel, click the + icon, then select the Image block and drag the element into the Tag block/container on the canvas.

Similarly, you can also drag in other dynamic elements (e.g., Name, Description) or non-dynamic elements (e.g., Columns, Divider, Icon) to customize the look.

Customizing your Tags page

When you first create your website in the new builder, the Tags page will be automatically added to your site as a default page.

To access your Tags page: Click on the Page icon in the left panel, and then select Tags.

Access the options by clicking the 3 dots menu next to Tags.

Tags page options:

  • Settings: Opens the Tags page settings in the right-hand design panel.
  • Edit Title & URL (disabled): This option is not available for default pages and will show as greyed out.
  • Disable: Gives you the option to disable the page. If you choose to do so, anyone who visits your Tags page URL will be met with a 404. (You can set a redirect for 404s if needed.)
  • Version History: Opens version history for this page only so you can restore an earlier version.
  • Switch Template: Allows you to switch the template for only the Tags page. When doing so, your color choices will remain, but the layout changes to the selected template.
  • Duplicate Page: Creates a new custom page identical to the default Tags page.
  • Delete: Permanently removes the page. To hide it without deleting, use Disable instead.

Choose which tags to appear

Select the Tag block on your canvas to open the design panel on the right. Next to Data, click on Tags, and then you can choose the tags you wish to feature.

The content tags selection modal will pop up. You’ll see the tags you’ve already added, plus any additional that you have available to add. Click on a tag to add it to your page. To remove a tag, simply click the x next to any added tag. When done making your selections, click the Save button.

Customizing your Tag page

Each tag featured on the Tags page or in a Tags block also has its own individual page to house any posts connected to that content tag. This dynamic Tag page will update with the posts attached to that selected tag, and can be customized using the design panel on the right.

However, because the Post block on the Tag page is dynamic, the options available to you will be for design purposes. You will not be able to update the data displayed on the page.
